Fees and admissions
We do not publish a price list, and you should be wary of any care home that does. Fees at The Elms are based on the care each person actually needs, which is only clear after a proper assessment. What follows is exactly how that works, so there are no surprises.
How fees are set
- Fees are based on the individual care needs of the resident, established at assessment,
- They are payable monthly in advance by standing order or direct debit,
- They are reviewed once a year, with a month’s notice of any change,
- Residential fees usually cover accommodation, laundry, meals, heating and other utility costs,
- Nursing fees depend on the level of clinical care required,
- If care needs change significantly, the fee is revisited and discussed with you at the time
Hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers and personal toiletries sit outside the fee. You will get the full list in writing before anyone moves in.
How admission works
- Come and look round. Visit, have a cup of tea, meet the team, talk to residents and ask whatever you want. Our brochure and Service User Guide are available on request.
- Pre admission assessment. The Manager, or Social Services, assesses healthcare, personal and social needs. This establishes whether we genuinely have the facilities, expertise and equipment to care for the person properly. If we do not, we will say so.
- A care plan is written. Drawn up with input from the resident, their relatives and the care professionals involved, setting out in detail what staff will do to meet their needs. It is confidential, reviewed regularly, and the resident has access to it at any time.
- A trial stay. New residents are invited to move in on a trial basis before anyone commits to a permanent place.
- Moving in. Every resident receives their own copy of our Service User Guide and Statement of Purpose, and is registered with a local GP.
Admission is subject to a room being available. For emergency admissions we follow the same process as closely as circumstances allow.
Funding
Our administrator can give you initial guidance on public and voluntary funding as it applies to your circumstances, and will point you to the right part of Cornwall Council where a financial assessment is needed. Raise it early rather than late. Nobody is asked to leave The Elms because their savings have run down, but the paperwork takes time and is far less stressful when it is started in good time.
Your GP, dentist and optician
All permanent residents keep the freedom to choose their own medical, dental and optician practitioners. The home is well supported by two Saltash GP surgeries and most new residents register with one of them, but tell us if you would rather stay with your own practice and we will work around it.
Talk to us
