The story of The Elms

The Elms is an independent care home in Saltash, the town known as the gateway to Cornwall, sitting on the banks of the Tamar on the border between Devon and Cornwall. Banks, churches, shops, the chemist, the post office, the library and two GP surgeries are all within easy reach of the front door, which matters more than people expect. It means residents stay part of the town rather than tucked away from it.

We are registered with the Care Quality Commission to care for up to 37 older people needing nursing. For the comfort and privacy of everyone living here, the few twin rooms were converted, so all 34 bedrooms are now single occupancy. Within those we can support up to six residents with a physical disability and up to six residents under 65 who need palliative care.

Nobody is a room number here.

What guides us

Four things we hold to, in how we care, how we talk to families and how we run the home day to day.

Dignity, privacy and choice

The home changes by listening to what residents and their families actually want. Privacy, dignity and choice sit at the centre of every decision, from what time someone gets up to where they take their meals.

Treated as an individual

The level of support each person needs is different, so we do not run a one size fits all routine. Care plans are written with the resident, their family and the professionals who already know them, then reviewed properly rather than filed away.

A team that stays

Our staff are chosen for their specialisms and every one of them completes a full training programme before working on the floor. A registered nurse is on duty 24 hours a day. Being independent rather than part of a chain means decisions get made by people who know the residents by name.

Active mind, active body

The happiness and wellbeing of residents comes first, and we work hard to keep both mind and body active. We encourage independence in everything, with staff on hand the moment help is needed.

Why families choose us

A home run by the people who work in it, in a town where residents can still feel part of things. Here is what families tell us made the difference.
